Helping Patients See What We See

Dental care is easier to understand when you can see the concern for yourself. Intraoral photos allow our team to capture close-up images inside your mouth, so you can better understand cavities, cracks, gum concerns, worn teeth, old restorations, and other dental findings.

At Dental Design Studio in Gilbert, AZ, intraoral photos help support clearer communication and treatment planning. Instead of only hearing a description of a problem, patients can view detailed images of their own teeth and gums while we explain what we see and why it matters.

Our office is located on E Guadalupe Road near Dana Park Village Square, Gilbert Road, Freestone District Park, Gilbert High School, and Downtown Gilbert. We serve patients from Val Vista Lakes, The Islands, Stonecreek, Freestone Station, Morrison Ranch, and surrounding East Valley communities.

What Are Intraoral Photos?

Intraoral photos are detailed images taken inside the mouth with a small dental camera. These photos may show the teeth, gums, bite surfaces, existing dental work, cracks, discoloration, plaque buildup, gumline changes, or areas of concern that may not be easy to see in a mirror.

The camera is small enough to move around the mouth and capture images from different angles. The photos can often be displayed on a screen so patients can view them during the appointment.

Intraoral photos do not replace dental exams or X-rays. Instead, they add another layer of information. X-rays help us see what is happening below the surface, while intraoral photos help show visible issues in a clear and understandable way.

Why Intraoral Photos Matter

Many dental concerns are difficult for patients to visualize. A cracked filling, worn crown margin, chipped tooth, gum recession, or cavity near the back of the mouth may not be visible at home. Even when a patient feels discomfort, it can be hard to understand what is causing it.

Intraoral photos help make dental findings more concrete. When patients can see an image of the tooth or gum tissue, treatment recommendations often make more sense. This can be especially helpful when deciding whether to monitor an area, repair a tooth, replace an old restoration, or move forward with preventive care.

Photos also help create a visual record over time. If a crack, area of wear, gum recession, or old filling is being monitored, updated photos can help show whether the concern is stable or changing.

A First Visit Focused on Clear Communication

At Dental Design Studio, your visit begins with a full understanding of your symptoms, goals, and oral health history. If an intraoral photo would help explain what we are seeing, our team may use the camera during your exam.

The process is simple. We position the small camera inside the mouth, take images of the area being evaluated, and show you the photos. Dr. Mannie Badyal or a member of our team can then explain what the image shows and how it relates to your oral health.

This helps patients feel more involved in their care. You can ask questions while looking at the same image we are reviewing, which often makes the next step easier to understand.

What Intraoral Photos Can Show

Intraoral photos can be useful for many types of dental findings.

Cavities and early decay

Photos may help show visible areas of decay, dark spots, enamel breakdown, or areas where plaque is collecting. While X-rays may still be needed to check between teeth or below existing restorations, photos can help patients see surface-level concerns.

Cracked or chipped teeth

Small cracks and chips can be difficult to see without magnification and lighting. Intraoral photos can show damaged areas more clearly so we can explain whether the tooth should be monitored or repaired.

Worn teeth

Grinding, clenching, acid erosion, or bite pressure can cause teeth to flatten, thin, or chip over time. Photos can help show patterns of wear and support conversations about night guards, restorations, or bite-related care.

Old fillings and crowns

Fillings and crowns can wear down, crack, loosen, or develop gaps around the edges. Intraoral photos can help show why an older restoration may need repair or replacement.

Gum recession

Receding gums can expose root surfaces and make teeth look longer. Photos can help track gumline changes and show areas that may be sensitive or more vulnerable to root decay.

Plaque and tartar buildup

Some patients benefit from seeing where plaque or tartar tends to collect. This can make home care recommendations more specific and easier to follow.

Cosmetic concerns

Photos can help with cosmetic planning for whitening, bonding, veneers, crowns, gum contouring, or clear aligner treatment. They allow us to evaluate tooth color, shape, spacing, symmetry, and gumline balance.

Intraoral Photos During Dental Exams

Intraoral photos may be used during routine dental exams to document areas that need attention or monitoring. They are especially helpful when a patient has a concern but cannot easily see the area themselves.

For example, if a back molar has a cracked filling, we can use a photo to show the damaged area. If the gumline is receding near a tooth, a photo can help show the exposed root surface. If a crown margin is wearing down, the image can make the recommendation for replacement easier to understand.

These photos support better patient education. They help turn an invisible or confusing dental concern into something patients can see and discuss.

Intraoral Photos and Treatment Planning

Treatment planning should feel clear, not rushed or confusing. Intraoral photos help us explain why certain treatments may be recommended and what could happen if a problem is ignored.

If a tooth has a small chip, the photo may help us discuss dental bonding. If an old filling is breaking down, the image may help explain whether a composite filling, inlay, onlay, or crown is appropriate. If gum disease or recession is visible, photos can support a conversation about periodontal maintenance or home care changes.

Photos also help patients compare options. When you can see the size, location, and severity of the issue, it becomes easier to understand why one treatment may be more appropriate than another.

Intraoral Photos for Monitoring Changes Over Time

Some dental concerns do not need immediate treatment, but they should be watched. Intraoral photos can help document those areas so we can compare changes at future visits.

This may include small cracks, early wear, gum recession, enamel defects, discoloration, old restorations, or areas that are not yet causing symptoms. If the area changes, the photos help show that progression. If it stays stable, the images support continued monitoring.

This approach can help patients avoid unnecessary treatment while still keeping a close eye on areas that may need care later.

Intraoral Photos for Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dental care depends on details. Tooth shape, shade, spacing, gumline position, symmetry, and smile proportions all affect the final result. Intraoral photos help us evaluate these details more clearly.

Photos may be used when planning teeth whitening, dental bonding, veneers, Lumineers, crowns, gum contouring, or clear aligners. They can help us identify what is affecting smile appearance and which treatment options may create the most natural-looking improvement.

For patients who are not sure what they want to change, photos can also make the consultation more useful. Seeing your smile from different angles can help clarify which concerns matter most to you.

Intraoral Photos for Restorative Dentistry

Restorative dentistry often involves repairing teeth that are damaged, decayed, worn, or weakened. Intraoral photos can help show the condition of a tooth before treatment begins.

They may be used to document cracked teeth, failing fillings, worn crowns, broken edges, cavities, or areas where the bite is causing damage. This helps patients understand why restorative care may be needed.

Photos may also be useful after treatment. They can show the completed restoration and provide a visual record of the tooth’s condition moving forward.

Intraoral Photos and Dental Anxiety

Dental anxiety can become worse when patients feel unsure about what is happening. Intraoral photos can help reduce some of that uncertainty by showing the exact area being discussed.

Instead of being told that a tooth is cracked or a filling is failing, you can see the image and ask questions. This can make treatment recommendations feel less abstract and more understandable.

At Dental Design Studio, we use intraoral photos as part of our communication-focused approach. If you feel nervous about dental care, let us know. We can take time to explain what we are seeing and help you feel more informed before making decisions.

Intraoral Photos and Second Opinions

Intraoral photos can be helpful when patients come in for a second opinion. If you were told you need treatment but were not shown the problem clearly, photos may help you better understand the condition of your teeth and gums.

During a second opinion visit, we can evaluate the area, take photos when helpful, and explain what we see. This can help you compare recommendations and feel more confident about your next step.

A second opinion does not always mean the first recommendation was wrong. It simply gives you more information so you can make a decision with better clarity.

Do Intraoral Photos Hurt?

No. Intraoral photos are usually quick and comfortable. The camera is small and does not involve radiation, numbing, or drilling. It simply takes close-up pictures inside the mouth.

Some patients with a strong gag reflex or dental anxiety may feel nervous about anything being placed in the mouth. If that applies to you, let our team know. We can move at a manageable pace and explain what we are doing before taking images.

Membership Options for Ongoing Dental Care

Dr. Ravi and his staff have been AMAZING!!! My husband Joe Sanchez needs implants because his teeth are not good. He wanted to get titanium implants so he can eat whatever he wants without much restriction. So in May '26 we decided to get them done at this location on 75th Avenue with Dr. Ravi. Dr. Ravi is an amazing dentist who TRULY cares for his patients! My husband currently has plastic implants until his gums heal completely for the permanent implants. This past Wednesday evening 9/16/26 upon "biting down" into a piece of bread, part of the plastic broke and that meant he could not eat much of anything. He texted Dr. Ravi (he gave Joe his personal number in case of any issues), and he responded the next morning and found out he was on vacation, out of the country. But that didn't stop Dr. Ravi from helping us. He told Joe to call the office so they can see him that same day (Thursday). Then Dr. Ravi called his office to give them a heads up so they can be ready to help Joe when he got there. He didn't have to do that but he did! In the beginning... The day before Joe was going in to start this procedure, Dr. Ravi called him (on a Sunday) just to give us peace of mind and to answer any questions we might have about what was going to happen the next day. THAT was impressive because he called on his day off and he seemed sincere. Of course I still had my doubts because of past experiences with dentists. Joe was asked to go back later the same week so they can make sure everything is looking good. But before he can go back in, Dr. Ravi called Joe in the evening to check on him. The office is only opened Mon-Thur. and Memorial weekend on Sunday, Joe lost a screw in the morning and the temp implant got loose, he texted Dr. Ravi (I had to convince him to as this was urgent), and he responded! He called Joe back and told him he was going to try to get someone to meet him at the office so they can help Joe. And he said, "Joe if I can't get a hold of anyone (since it's Memorial weekend), I will personally come to your home if you'd like, so I can help you. But if you can wait, one of my staff is going in on the holiday and we can do it then." That's what we did. What other dentist do you know that would be willing to go out of their way for you?! No one! There was another time that Joe needed to get in over the weekend and again, Dr. Ravi was there! There were also all the texts and calls that Dr. Ravi made to Joe just to see how he was feeling. He didn't have a staff do this, he did it himself. When I say, Dr. Ravi is amazing, I really mean it! I don't know any other dentist who would go this far for any patient. We are so very pleased with Dr. Ravi and his staff for truly caring and as they say, putting your money where your mouth is... My husband is almost ready for his permanent implants and we are so excited! We HIGHLY recommend Dr. Ravi and his staff because they genuinely care for their patients and go above and beyond so you can get the care that you need, and have the confidence in him and his team! I will do an update once Joe get's his permanents and maybe he'll let me add a pic. :)

I broke a temporary bridge. As usual Toni went above and beyond to squeeze me in the very next morning. She and Bernice worked hard to make me a new temporary, but it kept breaking. Finally, Toni thought outside the box and put my old one back on and repaired the broken part. I am a happy camper!

I finally found a dental office that can clean and treat me in my own wheelchair since I am unable to transfer to their dental chair. The cleaning was not unpleasant and Melanie and Dr. Karren were very personable. This was my first visit with them so I’m hoping things continue well.
