Oral Surgery in Greater Phoenix, AZ

9 Convenient Dental Offices In The Phoenix Area

Hearing that you need oral surgery can make a dental problem sound more complicated than it is. In a general dental setting, the term can include procedures such as removing a damaged tooth, treating a problematic wisdom tooth, or placing a dental implant.

Dental Design Studios provides selected surgical dental care throughout the Greater Phoenix area. Some procedures can be completed within our offices, while more complex treatment is sometimes better handled by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. If a referral is recommended, we will explain why and help you understand what to expect next.

When Might Surgical Dental Treatment Be Needed?

Surgery becomes an option when a problem cannot be addressed well with preventive or restorative care alone. A badly fractured tooth can be impossible to rebuild, a wisdom tooth can be impacted or repeatedly infected, or a missing tooth can be replaced with a dental implant.

Needing oral surgery does not automatically mean the condition is severe. Sometimes surgery is simply the most direct way to solve a specific problem after the alternatives have been considered.

Can the Tooth Be Saved First?

Removing a natural tooth should not be the automatic first response to pain or damage. A crown, root canal treatment, or another restoration can sometimes allow the tooth to remain in place when enough healthy structure and support remain.

Other teeth are too fractured, decayed, infected, or poorly supported to maintain successfully. The decision should come from an examination and dental imaging, with a clear explanation of why saving the tooth is or is not realistic.

Tooth Extractions and Wisdom Teeth

Tooth extraction is one of the most common surgical dental procedures. Some teeth can be removed relatively simply, while others are more involved because the tooth is broken, positioned unusually, or difficult to access.

Wisdom teeth require their own evaluation. They do not automatically need removal just because they are present, but extraction can make sense when they are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, damaging a neighboring tooth, or creating another identifiable problem.

Dental Implant Surgery

Dental implants are surgically placed in the jaw to support replacement teeth. They can replace a single missing tooth, stabilize a removable Snap-On Denture, or support fixed All-on-X full-arch treatment.

Implant planning depends on the condition of the treatment area, gum and bone health, medical history, and the type of final replacement. Some implant procedures can be completed the same day as extraction when the site and treatment plan support it, but healing still occurs afterward.

Sedation and Preparation

Many surgical dental procedures can be completed with local anesthetic. When a patient needs additional anxiety support, oral sedation is available at all nine Dental Design Studios locations, IV sedation can be arranged with a visiting provider, and nitrous oxide is available at Smile Dental Studio and 75th Ave Dental Studio. General anesthesia is not offered.

Preparation instructions depend on the procedure and sedation plan. Follow the specific directions given for eating, drinking, medications, transportation, and aftercare rather than assuming every oral surgery appointment requires the same routine.

Recovery and When Referral Makes Sense

Recovery varies with the procedure. A straightforward extraction, impacted wisdom-tooth removal, and implant surgery do not have identical healing timelines. Your dental team will give you instructions for eating, cleaning the area, controlling discomfort, and returning to normal activity.

A referral can be the better choice when the procedure is unusually complex, your medical history changes the surgical risk, or the treatment falls outside the care provided within Dental Design Studios. The purpose is simply to match the case with the provider and setting best equipped to handle it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a tooth extraction considered oral surgery?

Yes. Extractions range from straightforward removal of a fully erupted tooth to more involved surgical procedures.

Yes. The complexity depends on whether the tooth has erupted, its position, and how much gum or bone covers it.
Not necessarily. Many procedures use local anesthetic alone. Additional sedation may be considered depending on the procedure, your health, and your anxiety level.

No. General dentists perform many extractions. More complex cases are sometimes referred to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

I broke a temporary bridge. As usual Toni went above and beyond to squeeze me in the very next morning. She and Bernice worked hard to make me a new temporary, but it kept breaking. Finally, Toni thought outside the box and put my old one back on and repaired the broken part. I am a happy camper!

I finally found a dental office that can clean and treat me in my own wheelchair since I am unable to transfer to their dental chair. The cleaning was not unpleasant and Melanie and Dr. Karren were very personable. This was my first visit with them so I’m hoping things continue well.

Always a smooth start to the day, Gaylynn is gentle and a pleasure to chat with. Cleanings aren’t “fun” but I never mind it with DDS!
