Advanced Dental Imaging for Clearer Diagnosis and Planning

Some dental concerns require more detail than a standard dental X-ray can provide. When we need to evaluate bone, tooth roots, impacted teeth, nerves, sinuses, infections, or implant sites, a 3D cone beam dental scan can give us a more complete view.

At Dental Design Studio in Gilbert, AZ, 3D cone beam dental scans help our team plan treatment with greater precision. This technology creates a three-dimensional image of the teeth, jawbone, and surrounding structures, giving us important information before certain procedures.

Our office is located on E Guadalupe Road near Dana Park Village Square, Gilbert Road, Freestone District Park, Gilbert High School, and Downtown Gilbert. We serve patients from Val Vista Lakes, The Islands, Stonecreek, Freestone Station, Morrison Ranch, and surrounding East Valley communities.

What Is a 3D Cone Beam Dental Scan?

A 3D cone beam dental scan, also called CBCT imaging, is an advanced dental imaging tool that captures detailed three-dimensional views of the mouth, jaw, teeth, bone, and surrounding structures.

Traditional dental X-rays show a flat, two-dimensional image. These images are useful for many routine dental needs, including checking for cavities, bone levels, and certain infections. A cone beam scan provides more detail by showing the area from multiple angles.

This added detail can be especially useful for dental implants, wisdom teeth, oral surgery, root canal concerns, jaw issues, bone evaluation, and complex treatment planning.

Why 3D Dental Imaging Matters

Clear imaging helps create clearer treatment plans. When we can see the position of tooth roots, bone thickness, nerve pathways, sinus location, and impacted teeth in three dimensions, we can better understand what is happening below the surface.

A 3D scan may help us identify concerns that are harder to evaluate on a standard X-ray. It can also help reduce uncertainty before treatment. For example, implant treatment depends on bone height, bone width, and the location of nearby structures. Wisdom teeth removal depends on the position of the tooth, roots, bone, and nerves.

At Dental Design Studio, cone beam imaging supports better diagnosis and more informed treatment planning.

When a 3D Cone Beam Scan May Be Recommended

A 3D dental scan is not needed for every appointment. It may be recommended when a more detailed view would help us diagnose a concern or plan treatment more accurately.

Dental implant planning

Dental implants require enough healthy bone in the right location. A 3D scan can help evaluate bone height, bone width, tooth position, and nearby structures before implant treatment is planned.

Wisdom teeth evaluation

Wisdom teeth can be impacted, angled, or close to nerves and nearby molars. Cone beam imaging can help show the position of the teeth and surrounding anatomy before extraction planning.

Oral surgery planning

For extractions, impacted teeth, surgical tooth removal, and other oral surgery needs, a 3D scan can help us understand root shape, bone support, and nearby structures.

Root canal concerns

Some root canal cases are more complex because of hidden canals, infection, unusual root shape, or unclear symptoms. A cone beam scan may provide additional detail when standard imaging is not enough.

Jaw and TMJ concerns

In some cases, 3D imaging may help evaluate jaw structures, bite-related concerns, or areas connected to jaw discomfort.

Bone and infection evaluation

A 3D scan can help show bone changes, infection patterns, cysts, lesions, or areas that need closer evaluation.

A First Visit Focused on the Right Diagnostic Tools

Your visit begins with a conversation about your symptoms, concerns, and treatment goals. Our team will review your dental history and complete an exam before recommending imaging.

If a standard dental X-ray provides enough information, a 3D scan may not be necessary. If we need more detail to plan treatment or understand a complex issue, we may recommend cone beam imaging.

After the scan is completed, Dr. Mannie Badyal can review the images and explain the findings in clear language. You will understand what the scan shows, why it matters, and how it affects your treatment options.

What Happens During a 3D Cone Beam Dental Scan?

A cone beam scan is usually quick and non-invasive. You will be positioned near the imaging machine, and the scanner will rotate around your head to capture the images.

You do not need numbing, drilling, or any uncomfortable dental treatment during the scan. The process is designed to gather detailed information without placing instruments inside the mouth for an extended period.

Once the scan is complete, the images can be reviewed from different angles. This allows our team to evaluate the teeth, roots, jawbone, nerves, sinuses, and surrounding structures with more detail than many standard images.

3D Cone Beam Scans for Dental Implants

Dental implants need careful planning. The implant must be placed in an area with enough bone support and enough space away from important structures such as nerves, sinuses, and neighboring tooth roots.

A 3D cone beam scan helps us evaluate the missing tooth area before implant treatment begins. It may show if there is enough bone for an implant, if bone grafting may be needed, or if the implant position needs to be adjusted for a safer and more stable result.

For patients considering single implants, implant bridges, implant-supported dentures, or All-on-4 implants, 3D imaging can play an important role in treatment planning.

3D Cone Beam Scans for Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth can be difficult to evaluate with a visual exam alone. Some wisdom teeth are fully impacted below the gums. Others are partially erupted, angled, or positioned close to nearby nerves and molars.

A 3D scan can help us see the tooth position, root shape, surrounding bone, and relationship to nearby structures. This information can be useful when planning wisdom teeth extraction or deciding if a tooth can be monitored.

If wisdom teeth are causing pain, swelling, food trapping, jaw soreness, or repeated gum irritation, imaging may help us understand the cause and recommend the next step.

3D Cone Beam Scans for Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment depends on understanding the inside of the tooth and the area around the roots. Some teeth have complex canal shapes, hidden canals, infection near the root, or symptoms that do not clearly match what is visible on a standard X-ray.

In certain cases, a cone beam scan may help identify the source of pain or infection. It may also help evaluate a tooth that has had previous root canal treatment and is still causing symptoms.

Not every root canal case requires 3D imaging, but it can be useful when the diagnosis or anatomy needs more detail.

3D Cone Beam Scans for Oral Surgery

Oral surgery requires a clear understanding of the tooth, root, bone, and surrounding anatomy. A 3D scan can help with planning extractions, impacted tooth removal, surgical tooth removal, and implant-related procedures.

For example, if a tooth is broken below the gumline, has curved roots, or sits near important structures, cone beam imaging may provide a more complete view before treatment begins.

This does not replace clinical judgment, but it helps guide the plan and gives patients a clearer explanation of what the procedure may involve.

3D Dental Imaging and Patient Education

One of the benefits of 3D imaging is that it can help patients better understand their diagnosis. A dental problem can be difficult to picture when it is hidden below the gums or inside the bone.

With cone beam imaging, our team can review the area from different angles and explain what we see. This may help patients understand why treatment is recommended, why timing matters, or why one option may be better than another.

At Dental Design Studio, we use diagnostic information to make conversations clearer. Patients should understand what is happening before they decide how to move forward.

3D Cone Beam Scans and Dental Anxiety

Advanced imaging can be helpful for patients who feel anxious about dental treatment because it provides more information before a procedure begins. When patients can see the area being evaluated and understand the plan, treatment may feel less uncertain.

The scan itself is usually quick and does not involve dental instruments touching the teeth. If you feel nervous about imaging or dental treatment, let our team know. We can explain each step before it happens and help make the visit feel more manageable.

For patients returning to care after a long gap, 3D imaging may also help us create a more complete treatment plan without relying on guesswork.

How 3D Scans Support Treatment Planning

Dental treatment planning is strongest when it is based on accurate information. A 3D cone beam scan may help us evaluate:

Bone height and width

This is important for dental implants, extractions, and understanding the support around teeth.

Tooth root shape

Root position and shape can affect extractions, root canal treatment, and diagnosis.

Nerve pathways

Knowing the location of important nerves is especially useful before wisdom teeth removal, implant planning, and certain surgical procedures.

Sinus location

For upper tooth replacement and implant planning, sinus position can affect treatment options.

Impacted teeth

A scan can show teeth trapped below the gums or bone and how they relate to nearby structures.

Infection or bone changes

Cone beam imaging may show areas of infection, bone loss, cysts, lesions, or changes that need closer evaluation.

Is a 3D Cone Beam Scan Needed for Every Patient?

No. Many dental visits only require a visual exam, intraoral photos, or standard dental X-rays. A 3D cone beam scan is recommended when it can provide information that changes diagnosis, treatment planning, or the understanding of a complex concern.

We do not use advanced imaging just to add another step. We recommend it when the extra detail is useful for your care.

During your visit, we will explain why a scan is being recommended and what information we hope to learn from it.

Dr. Ravi and his staff have been AMAZING!!! My husband Joe Sanchez needs implants because his teeth are not good. He wanted to get titanium implants so he can eat whatever he wants without much restriction. So in May '26 we decided to get them done at this location on 75th Avenue with Dr. Ravi. Dr. Ravi is an amazing dentist who TRULY cares for his patients! My husband currently has plastic implants until his gums heal completely for the permanent implants. This past Wednesday evening 9/16/26 upon "biting down" into a piece of bread, part of the plastic broke and that meant he could not eat much of anything. He texted Dr. Ravi (he gave Joe his personal number in case of any issues), and he responded the next morning and found out he was on vacation, out of the country. But that didn't stop Dr. Ravi from helping us. He told Joe to call the office so they can see him that same day (Thursday). Then Dr. Ravi called his office to give them a heads up so they can be ready to help Joe when he got there. He didn't have to do that but he did! In the beginning... The day before Joe was going in to start this procedure, Dr. Ravi called him (on a Sunday) just to give us peace of mind and to answer any questions we might have about what was going to happen the next day. THAT was impressive because he called on his day off and he seemed sincere. Of course I still had my doubts because of past experiences with dentists. Joe was asked to go back later the same week so they can make sure everything is looking good. But before he can go back in, Dr. Ravi called Joe in the evening to check on him. The office is only opened Mon-Thur. and Memorial weekend on Sunday, Joe lost a screw in the morning and the temp implant got loose, he texted Dr. Ravi (I had to convince him to as this was urgent), and he responded! He called Joe back and told him he was going to try to get someone to meet him at the office so they can help Joe. And he said, "Joe if I can't get a hold of anyone (since it's Memorial weekend), I will personally come to your home if you'd like, so I can help you. But if you can wait, one of my staff is going in on the holiday and we can do it then." That's what we did. What other dentist do you know that would be willing to go out of their way for you?! No one! There was another time that Joe needed to get in over the weekend and again, Dr. Ravi was there! There were also all the texts and calls that Dr. Ravi made to Joe just to see how he was feeling. He didn't have a staff do this, he did it himself. When I say, Dr. Ravi is amazing, I really mean it! I don't know any other dentist who would go this far for any patient. We are so very pleased with Dr. Ravi and his staff for truly caring and as they say, putting your money where your mouth is... My husband is almost ready for his permanent implants and we are so excited! We HIGHLY recommend Dr. Ravi and his staff because they genuinely care for their patients and go above and beyond so you can get the care that you need, and have the confidence in him and his team! I will do an update once Joe get's his permanents and maybe he'll let me add a pic. :)

I broke a temporary bridge. As usual Toni went above and beyond to squeeze me in the very next morning. She and Bernice worked hard to make me a new temporary, but it kept breaking. Finally, Toni thought outside the box and put my old one back on and repaired the broken part. I am a happy camper!

I finally found a dental office that can clean and treat me in my own wheelchair since I am unable to transfer to their dental chair. The cleaning was not unpleasant and Melanie and Dr. Karren were very personable. This was my first visit with them so I’m hoping things continue well.
