Dental Cleanings and Exams in Greater Phoenix, AZ

9 Convenient Dental Offices In The Phoenix Area

Routine dental visits are less about finding something wrong and more about keeping small changes from becoming bigger surprises. A professional cleaning removes buildup you cannot always reach at home, while the examination gives your dentist a chance to check the teeth, gums, bite, and other areas of the mouth over time.

Whether you have stayed consistent with preventive care or it has been a few years since your last visit, Dental Design Studios can help you get back on track. You do not need to get your teeth “ready” before coming in. Start where you are, and we will work from there.

What Happens During a Routine Dental Exam?

Your dentist evaluates the teeth for signs of decay, cracks, wear, failing restorations, and other changes. The gums are also checked for inflammation, recession, bleeding, and signs that periodontal disease may be developing. Depending on your history and what we see, the visit may also include dental X-rays or other records. Those images help reveal areas that are difficult to evaluate by sight alone, including decay between teeth, changes around roots, and the condition of the supporting bone.

What Does a Professional Cleaning Remove?

Brushing and flossing are essential, but plaque can harden into tartar in areas that are easy to miss. Once that buildup becomes mineralized, it cannot be removed effectively with a regular toothbrush. During a professional cleaning, the hygienist removes plaque and tartar from the teeth and around the gumline, then polishes the teeth to remove surface buildup and staining. The appointment is also a good time to identify places where home care could be easier or more effective.

How Often Should I Have My Teeth Cleaned?

Many patients follow a routine preventive schedule, but there is no single interval that fits every mouth. Someone with a history of gum disease, frequent cavities, extensive dental work, or other risk factors may need to be seen more often than a patient with consistently healthy teeth and gums. Your dentist and hygienist can recommend a schedule based on what they actually see instead of applying the same calendar to everyone. If you are overdue, the important thing is to restart care without worrying about how much time has passed.

Routine Cleaning or Deep Cleaning?

A routine preventive cleaning is intended for patients whose gums and supporting tissues are generally healthy. When periodontal disease has created deeper pockets and buildup below the gumline, a standard cleaning may not be enough. Scaling and root planing, often called a deep cleaning, reaches below the gumline to remove deposits from the root surfaces. If that type of treatment is recommended, we will explain what was found and why the cleaning needs to go beyond routine preventive care.

Digital Records and TRIOS Scanning

Digital tools can make it easier to document changes and plan selected treatments. TRIOS 3D intraoral scanners are available at all nine Dental Design Studios offices and can create detailed digital models without traditional impression material when a scan is appropriate. A scanner does not replace a dental examination or X-rays. Each type of record answers different questions, so your dentist will use the tools that make sense for the concern being evaluated.

Preventive Visits for the Whole Family

Dental Design Studios provides family dental care for adults and many children beginning around age five. Routine exams help monitor how children’s teeth are developing, identify cavities early, and create opportunities to discuss sealants or other preventive needs as permanent teeth emerge. For adults, regular visits also provide continuity. Changes in old fillings, crowns, gum health, tooth wear, and bite are easier to understand when the dentist can compare them with previous exams instead of viewing each visit as a one-time snapshot.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I have not been to the dentist in years?

You can still schedule a routine evaluation. The first visit may involve an exam and X-rays before the cleaning type is determined, especially if there is significant buildup or concern about gum disease.

Some problems develop in areas that are difficult to see directly, including between teeth and around roots. X-rays are taken based on your history, symptoms, risk, and what the dentist needs to evaluate.

A routine cleaning is designed for generally healthy gums. Periodontal disease may require treatment below the gumline and a different maintenance schedule.

Not necessarily. The appropriate interval depends on the child’s age, cavity risk, oral hygiene, development, and other individual factors.

Yes. Let the office know about your anxiety when you schedule. We can explain what to expect and discuss ways to make the visit more manageable.

Excellent service! I was able to get in to check on some sutures that pulled out. Doctor Stephanie Kim was able to fit me in and look at my incision site with her usual careful skills and she determined all was healing very nicely and I was good to go.
