When Does a Tooth Need a Filling?

A filling is often the right choice when decay has created a cavity or when a small area of tooth structure has been damaged and can be repaired without more extensive coverage. The dentist removes the compromised material, preserves the healthy structure that remains, and restores the missing portion with composite resin.

What Happens During a Composite Filling?

The tooth is numbed when needed, the decayed or damaged structure is removed, and the area is prepared for the restorative material. Composite resin is placed in layers, hardened with a curing light, shaped to rebuild the tooth, and polished.

Can Old Fillings Be Replaced?

Yes, when there is a reason to replace them. Fillings can wear, crack, leak, break, or develop new decay around the edges. An older metal filling does not need removal solely because of its color, and a tooth-colored filling is not automatically better simply because it is newer.

If an existing filling is still sealed and the tooth is healthy, monitoring it can be all that is needed. When replacement is necessary, the dentist will evaluate whether another filling is sufficient or whether the tooth now needs more support.

When Is a Filling Too Small a Solution?

The decision is based on how much healthy tooth remains and how the tooth handles bite forces. More treatment is not automatically better; the aim is to use the least extensive restoration that can reasonably protect the tooth.

Same-Day Fillings and Aftercare

Composite fillings are among the treatments that may be completed through same-day dentistry when appropriate. Most routine fillings are finished during the appointment, although the tooth may remain numb for a period afterward.

Some temporary sensitivity to temperature or pressure can occur, particularly when the cavity was deeper. Keep the area clean, avoid chewing on the numb side until sensation returns, and let us know if the bite feels high or discomfort is increasing instead of settling.
