Emergency Dental Care in Greater Phoenix, AZ

9 Convenient Dental Offices In The Phoenix Area

Dental problems have a way of becoming urgent at inconvenient times. A tooth that was mildly sensitive yesterday may suddenly become painful, a filling can break while you are eating, or swelling may appear around a tooth that did not seem to be causing trouble before.

When you are unsure what to do, the most useful first step is to call (602) 775-5656. We can evaluate urgent dental problems, explain how quickly you should be seen, and help you understand what treatment the problem is likely to require. You do not have to diagnose it yourself before making an appointment.

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any problem that needs prompt attention because of significant pain, infection, injury, uncontrolled bleeding, or the risk of losing a tooth. Severe toothaches, facial swelling, knocked-out teeth, broken teeth, and infections are common examples, but urgency depends on the symptoms and circumstances.

Other problems, such as a lost filling or chipped tooth, are not usually life-threatening but can still require timely care. Calling the office allows the dental team to ask a few questions, give you immediate guidance, and determine how soon the problem should be evaluated.

Severe Tooth Pain or Sensitivity

Tooth pain can come from deep decay, an inflamed or infected nerve, a crack, a damaged filling, gum problems, or several other causes. Pain that is persistent, worsening, keeping you awake, or making it difficult to chew deserves attention even if there is no visible damage.

A dental examination and X-rays can help identify where the pain is coming from. Treatment depends on the cause and can involve a filling, crown, root canal treatment, extraction, periodontal care, or another approach. Pain medication can provide temporary relief, but it does not correct the underlying dental problem.

Swelling, Infection, and Dental Abscesses

Swelling near a tooth or in the gums can be a sign of infection and should not be ignored. Other signs include tenderness, a bad taste, drainage, fever, or pain when biting. Dental infections can worsen without treatment, so contact the office promptly if you notice these symptoms.

Rapidly increasing swelling that spreads into the face or neck, or swelling that makes it difficult to breathe or swallow, requires immediate medical attention. Those symptoms go beyond a routine dental emergency and should be evaluated in an emergency medical setting.

Broken, Cracked, or Knocked-Out Teeth

A cracked or broken tooth should be evaluated even if it does not hurt. Some fractures only affect the outer portion of the tooth, while others extend deeper and can expose the nerve or weaken the tooth enough that it cannot be restored.

If a permanent tooth is completely knocked out, handle it by the crown rather than the root, avoid scrubbing it, and contact a dentist immediately. Time matters in these cases. If the tooth slips back into the socket easily, it can be held there without forcing it; otherwise keep it moist and bring it with you for urgent evaluation.

Lost Fillings and Crowns

A lost filling or crown can leave the underlying tooth sensitive and vulnerable. Save a crown if you can find it and bring it to the appointment. Do not use household glue or another non-dental adhesive to put it back in place.

Sometimes the restoration can be replaced or recemented. In other cases, the tooth underneath has changed because of decay, fracture, or wear and needs a different solution. An examination is the only reliable way to know.

Emergency Root Canal Treatment and Tooth Removal

An infected or severely inflamed tooth does not automatically need to be removed. If enough healthy tooth remains, root canal treatment can often treat the infection inside the tooth and preserve it. Root canal treatment is also one of the procedures that can often be completed the same day, depending on the tooth and the extent of the infection.

When the tooth is too damaged to restore, extraction can be the better option. We will explain why one approach makes more sense than the other and discuss tooth replacement if a permanent tooth needs to be removed.

What Should I Do While I Wait for the Appointment?

Keep the area as clean as you comfortably can and follow any instructions the office gives you when you call. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums or tooth, since it can irritate the tissue. If a tooth is broken, try not to chew on that side until it has been evaluated.

For swelling, a cold compress on the outside of the face often feels more comfortable than heat. If your symptoms change quickly, especially if swelling begins affecting breathing or swallowing, seek immediate medical care rather than waiting for a dental appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I go to the emergency room for a toothache?
Most toothaches are best evaluated by a dentist because the underlying dental problem usually requires dental treatment. Go to an emergency department for difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading facial or neck swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, serious facial trauma, or another medical emergency.

Yes, call the office and explain what happened. The team can determine how quickly you should be seen based on pain, the amount of damage, and whether the nerve or structures supporting the tooth appear to be involved.

Sometimes. Root canal treatment can preserve a tooth when the infection is inside the tooth and enough healthy structure remains. If the tooth cannot be restored, extraction can be the better option.

The tooth should still be evaluated. A lost crown can expose the underlying tooth, and the fit can change if the crown is left off for too long.

New dental swelling should be discussed with a dentist, especially when it is worsening or associated with pain, fever, drainage, or a bad taste. Rapidly spreading swelling or breathing and swallowing difficulty requires immediate medical attention.
Handle the tooth by the crown rather than the root, keep it moist, and contact a dentist immediately. If you can place it back in the socket without forcing it, that may help; otherwise keep it in milk or an appropriate tooth-preservation solution while you seek urgent dental care.

I broke a temporary bridge. As usual Toni went above and beyond to squeeze me in the very next morning. She and Bernice worked hard to make me a new temporary, but it kept breaking. Finally, Toni thought outside the box and put my old one back on and repaired the broken part. I am a happy camper!

I finally found a dental office that can clean and treat me in my own wheelchair since I am unable to transfer to their dental chair. The cleaning was not unpleasant and Melanie and Dr. Karren were very personable. This was my first visit with them so I’m hoping things continue well.
